PAL-V gets green light for production of flying car

Dutch PAL-V has received permission from the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) to start production of its flying car. This means the company is allowed to produce its products on an industrial scale.

The first product is the Liberty, a three-wheeled car with a foldable rotor and propeller. The vehicle can both drive on the road and fly, but requires a runway for takeoff and landing, as it cannot take off vertically.

In the air, the Liberty can cover a maximum of 400 to 500 kilometers. Drivers need a pilot's license in addition to a driver's license. On the road, the vehicle reaches a maximum speed of 160 kilometers per hour.

The first 250 units of the Liberty have already been reserved, including by the Dutch fire department, meaning production capacity for the next three years is full.

The vehicle still needs to obtain a type certificate, which demonstrates that it is safe enough as an aircraft. PAL-V expects to receive this certificate in about a year and a half, with delivery of the first flying cars to customers in 2028, provided everything goes according to plan.
