Custom On-Screen Display Control for Cheap Monitors

A maker has developed a method to control the on-screen display (OSD) chip in inexpensive composite monitors, enabling custom graphics.

The project was inspired by a need to modify a monitor for a Robbie the Robot suit, where the actor's view was obstructed. An automotive reversing camera monitor was repurposed.

The monitor's OSD chip, an AMT630A, includes video switching, a graphics system, and an 8052 microcontroller. While the microcontroller core remains inaccessible, the chip's OSD functionality can be controlled.

Through extensive work, the maker has created a GitHub repository with an Arduino library that allows custom OSD graphics. Control is achieved via an I2C port using an ESP32 microcontroller.

The goal is to use this custom OSD for displaying navigational sensor data to assist in maneuvering the Robbie the Robot suit.
