Open Source Tricorder Aims for Scientific Utility

A decade-long project has yielded a new iteration of an open-source tricorder, focusing on scientific measurement capabilities rather than screen accuracy.

The Open Source Science Tricorder Cyberdeck, developed by PeterAJansen, integrates multiple scientific instruments. These include a scintillation crystal for spectroscopic analysis of beta- or gamma-ray sources, a visible light spectrometer, a thermal camera, a magnetic field camera, a magnetometer, and environmental sensors for temperature, pressure, humidity, and concentrations of particulates, VOCs, and CO2.

The device utilizes a Clockwork Pi uConsole for its form factor, featuring a QWERTY keyboard and an IPS display. A Compute Module 5 handles data processing. While not as stylish as its Star Trek counterpart, the design is considered practical.
