Tijuana Sports Complex Integrates Recreation and Community

Centro Deportivo Abejas, a new public sports complex in Tijuana, Mexico, is designed to serve a growing neighborhood with limited recreational access. The project emphasizes a continuous public landscape connecting various sports and community activities.

The 60,000-square-meter complex prioritizes open space as its main organizing element, linking soccer fields, basketball courts, running tracks, and training areas with pedestrian paths and plazas. Instead of separate zones, the design integrates sports infrastructure with everyday public use.

Spaces between facilities are designed for movement, informal gathering, and interaction. A palette of concrete and durable hardscape defines circulation, while sports surfaces and landscape distinguish different zones. Architectural elements are integrated into the landscape to maintain public space continuity.

By combining sports facilities with open space and pedestrian connections, the complex extends the role of public sports infrastructure into a broader civic setting. It aims to create a place for movement, recreation, and gathering within Tijuana's expanding urban fabric.
