Sony blocks The Last of Us Part II multiplayer mod

The developer of a popular multiplayer mod for The Last of Us Part II has halted its release after a request from Sony Interactive Entertainment.

Developer Speclizer received a letter from Sony requesting not to release the mod. The reason for this request has not been disclosed. The mod, which resembled the Factions multiplayer mode from the first game, was already playable and was scheduled for release this month.

Speclizer shared his disappointment on X, but hopes to be able to take fans to a new, original project. Sony has not yet publicly commented on the situation.

The mod was intended as an alternative after Naughty Dog canceled their own The Last of Us multiplayer game in 2022. They stated that the game would require too much maintenance, which would come at the expense of single-player projects. Naughty Dog is currently working on a new single-player game, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet.
