Oliver Stiff designs collectible "fashion furniture"

Royal College of Art graduate Oliver Stiff has created a series of sculptural furniture pieces that aim to "bring the language, attitude and materials of fashion design into furniture". His recent works include the Hurmull Chair and Side Table set, and the Socialite Chair, made using deadstock fabrics from Vivienne Westwood.

Stiff's furniture is informed by garment construction and styling, using bodily references, silhouette, and material to create provocative pieces. He believes furniture can operate similarly to fashion in creating desire and identity through styling and storytelling.

The Hurmull Chair and Side Table are hand-crafted from recycled tubular steel and sustainably sourced leather offcuts. The leather is tensioned around stainless steel frames with laced detailing, mimicking corsetry to give the chair a bodily silhouette.

The Socialite Chair uses FSC-certified birch plywood and recycled metal, upholstered with deadstock textiles from Vivienne Westwood. Stiff designed this piece to question the value of high-end fashion textiles once they are no longer associated with the industry, repurposing surplus materials to show their extended value.

Stiff aimed for his sustainable designs to be theatrical and glamorous, challenging the notion that sustainable design must have a modest aesthetic. Styling and imagery were key aspects of his design process, with the Socialite Chair styled alongside models wearing Vivienne Westwood garments.

Oliver Stiff was awarded the Ultrafabrics Sustainable Design Award for his work at New Designers in London.
