Former School to Become Housing for Ukrainian Families
Architecture studio Office for Future has unveiled plans to convert a former school in Stavyshche into temporary housing for 42 families displaced by the war in Ukraine.

The project, named Dvir, aims to provide one, two, and three-bedroom apartments, along with accessible units, within the existing school building. Supported by the charity Housing for IDP, the development will also feature shared spaces designed to foster social connection between residents and the local community.
Office for Future founder Paolo Russo stated the goal is to offer high-quality private living spaces while creating meeting places for community integration. The intervention aims to use architecture as a tool for social reconstruction and community regeneration.
The design includes common areas, children's play zones, and meeting spaces for cultural activities. A central courtyard will be transformed into a planted green space with retained asphalt walkways. A new timber roof with photovoltaic panels will be added, and freestanding wooden walkways will connect the apartments.
The studio hopes that adapting a familiar, landmark building will aid the integration of displaced residents into the rural town of Stavyshche. The project seeks to create a new community that can merge with the existing one, acknowledging the trauma of losing homes.
