Office for Future Converts Ukrainian School into Housing

The Office for Future is transforming a former school in Stavyshche, Ukraine, into housing for 42 families displaced by the war. The project, named "Dvir – The Shared Courtyard," aims to provide homes while preserving the building's community role.

The approximately 1,900-square-meter building will house 42 apartments, ranging from studios to three-bedroom units, including accessible options. It also features 200 square meters of shared indoor spaces and communal areas intended for cultural activities open to the wider community.

The intervention retains the existing structure, reorganizing its interior and adding new timber elements. A new timber roof incorporates photovoltaic panels, and the building's envelope is upgraded for energy efficiency.

The former asphalt courtyard is being transformed into a permeable green space through desealing. Original paving is repurposed for pedestrian paths, creating a connection between the building and the outdoor shared area.

This project is the third intervention by the Charity Foundation Housing for IDP in Ukraine. It combines adaptive reuse, new timber construction, energy upgrades, and landscape transformation, respecting the building's historical presence and collective memory.

Other initiatives addressing housing for displaced people include Ukraine's pavilion at the Venice Biennale, "Pool of Questions," which restores abandoned buildings for internally displaced people. The Balearic Social Housing Model and OMA/Y.A. Studio's 730 Stanyan in San Francisco also focus on affordable and transitional housing.
