Trash Pendulum Clock Built by Artist Niklas Roy

Artist Niklas Roy has created a functional pendulum clock entirely from discarded materials, challenging the precision associated with traditional watchmaking.

Named "Glashütte Trash Clock," the artwork was made during a residency in Glashütte, Germany, a town known for its watchmaking heritage. Roy aimed to create the opposite of the precision typically found there.

The clock was constructed using only locally sourced trash, including tape, zip ties, hot glue, cardboard, a yardstick, and plastic pieces. It operates for approximately 30 minutes.

Key components include a paperclip escapement, which regulates the clock's movement, and a glass bottle used as a gong. A "random complication" feature, inspired by games of chance, adds an existential element by answering the question 'Now or Never?'
