Neom Stadium Plans Shelved Indefinitely

Saudi Arabia has reportedly abandoned plans to build the Neom Stadium, originally intended as a venue for the 2034 World Cup.

According to Reuters, the 46,000-seat stadium, planned to be suspended 350 meters above ground as part of The Line mega-city, has been "quietly shelving" indefinitely. This marks another setback for the Neom project, with The Line city itself also facing abandonment.

Saudi Arabia had announced 15 stadiums for the 2034 World Cup, including 11 new ones like Neom Stadium, with four existing venues slated for renovation. It remains unclear if a replacement stadium will be built or if the tournament will proceed with 14 venues.

While Neom Stadium plans are shelved, other World Cup stadium projects, such as the Aramco Stadium, are progressing. However, the broader Neom development has seen slowed progress, leadership changes, and reported redundancies.

Further challenges for Neom include the cancellation of plans for the Trojena ski resort to host the 2029 Asian Winter Games.
