NASA Initiative Boosts Florida's Aerospace Workforce Pipeline

NASA has awarded $10.5 million to seven organizations nationwide through its new State Hubs initiative, with Space Florida receiving funding for Project ORBIT. This project aims to enhance opportunities for middle and high school students and connect skilled workers with aerospace employers.

NASA Associate Administrator for STEM Engagement, Elaine Ho, visited three Central Florida schools to observe students in aerospace engineering, robotics, welding, and other technical programs. The visits highlighted the Space Florida Academy, which has expanded to 42 school districts since its August 2024 launch.

The academy prepares students for careers in aviation, aerospace, advanced manufacturing, construction, cybersecurity, logistics, and semiconductors. Programs like the Aeronautics & Flight Exploration (AFEX) at Merritt Island High School and robotics labs at Edgewood Junior/Senior High School were showcased.

Instructors emphasized showing students the diverse pathways into the space industry, while students expressed excitement about being part of larger projects and pursuing careers in fields like piloting and space exploration.
