DAVINCI Probe Passes Key Thermal Test

NASA's DAVINCI probe has successfully completed a critical thermal test, demonstrating its ability to withstand the extreme temperatures it will encounter on Venus.

An engineering model of the Deep Atmosphere Venus Investigation of Noble gases, Chemistry, and Imaging (DAVINCI) probe underwent a rigorous test from August 28 to September 10.

During the test, the probe was placed in a ceramic-lined chamber with walls heated to 869 F (465 C).

The temperature was increased over approximately one hour, mimicking the heating rate the probe will experience during its descent to Venus's surface.

DAVINCI aims to investigate Venus's origin, evolution, and current state to assess if it was once habitable and similar to Earth.
