NASA’s Canadarm Recognized as 300th IEEE Milestone

The Shuttle Remote Manipulator System, commonly known as Canadarm, has been designated the 300th IEEE Milestone, celebrating its significant contributions to space exploration and robotics. The project originated from NASA's invitation to Canada in 1969 to collaborate on reusable spacecraft, drawing inspiration from a Canadian robot used in nuclear reactors. Development began in 1975, with Spar Aerospace leading a team of subcontractors and researchers.

Engineered to operate in zero gravity, the Canadarm had to be lightweight and possess six degrees of freedom for precise movement. It was constructed from materials like titanium, stainless steel, and graphite epoxy, making it too light to support itself in Earth's gravity. Extensive testing in simulated weightless environments and computer simulations, along with astronaut training, ensured its operational readiness. The first Canadarm was presented to NASA in February 1981 and deployed later that year.

NASA subsequently ordered four more systems, with Canadarm2 being attached to the International Space Station in 2001 to aid in its construction and ongoing maintenance. The original Canadarm completed its final mission in July 2011. The IEEE Milestone program honors technical developments at least 25 years old that have had a significant global impact.
