NASA Seeks New Flight Directors for Artemis and Beyond

NASA is opening applications for flight directors, a critical leadership role in human spaceflight mission control at Johnson Space Center. This initiative supports the agency's goals for sustained lunar presence and future Mars missions.

The application period for new flight directors is open until Monday, October 12. Selected candidates will lead missions to the International Space Station, Artemis lunar missions, and eventually, Mars missions.

Flight directors are responsible for guiding teams of flight controllers, astronauts, and partners in real-time mission execution and risk management. They collaborate with various partners to ensure operational plans align with mission objectives and spacecraft capabilities.

Candidates must be U.S. citizens with a bachelor's degree in a relevant STEM field and possess substantial professional experience, including decision-making in high-stress, high-risk environments. Prior experience as a flight controller is not required.

NASA plans to announce selections by the end of the year. New flight directors will undergo extensive training in flight control, spacecraft systems, leadership, and risk management.
