NASA Tests New Pressure Sensitive Paint on Model Wing

Researchers at NASA's Langley Research Center have conducted groundbreaking tests using unsteady Pressure Sensitive Paint on a standard wind tunnel model, the Benchmark Supercritical Wing. This marks the first time this technique has been used on a large-scale, freely moving model in a low-oxygen environment within the Transonic Dynamics Tunnel.

The specialized paint glows pink-purple under ultraviolet light, with its brightness varying based on air pressure applied to the wing. High-speed cameras captured these changes, providing valuable data to improve computer modeling for future aircraft and rocket designs.

Benchmark wings are universal models used to refine computer simulations with wind tunnel data, not representing specific aircraft. The integration of unsteady pressure sensitive paint into wind tunnel tests has been a long-term goal for NASA researchers.

This successful test opens possibilities for future research on flexible aircraft models designed for improved flight efficiency and lays the groundwork for enhanced simulations and designs in aeronautics.
