NASA Launches State Hubs Initiative for Space Workforce Development

NASA has initiated its State Hubs for Skilled Technical Workforce program to prepare future employees for the growing space economy. The program aims to align strategies, foster partnerships, and engage small businesses.

The initiative, launched on September 15, 2026, convened awardees at Space Center Houston. Elaine Ho, associate administrator for NASA’s Office of STEM Engagement, emphasized the program's priority status due to the accelerating space economy and the need to guide students into technical careers.

Project leaders and partners met to discuss workforce needs, skillsets, credentials, and hiring trends. Seven states—California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Minnesota, Texas, and Utah—were selected in August to lead state-specific aerospace industry programs.

Discussions highlighted challenges in the STEM workforce pipeline, such as poor coordination between industry and educational institutions, difficulties in scaling programs, and misconceptions about manufacturing jobs.

In the coming months, awardees will begin implementing programs and resources to connect students with the necessary technical skills and experiences for the aerospace workforce. This effort aims to ensure a future workforce capable of advancing NASA's missions and maintaining U.S. leadership in space.
