NASA Selects New Science Investigations for Moon Base

NASA has chosen three new scientific investigations and their associated instruments to enhance understanding of the Moon and support the development of the Moon Base. These payloads will be delivered to the lunar surface via NASA's Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) initiative.

The selected payloads aim to study lunar resources, identify natural shelters, and assess environmental hazards, providing crucial data for establishing a safe and sustainable human presence on the Moon under the Artemis and Moon Base programs.

The Lunar Environment Monitoring Station – South Pole (LEMS-SP) will monitor micrometeoroids, track volatile materials, and detect seismic events to assess hazards for the Moon Base.

The Geophysical Investigation for Mapping Lunar Interior (GIMLI) payload will search for subterranean lava tubes at the Marius Hills Pit, which could serve as natural shelters for astronauts from extreme temperatures and radiation.

The Distribution of Ice and Surface Characteristics Observatory (DISCO) will measure ice in lunar micro-cold traps and study surface behavior, including the impact of rocket exhaust and surface stability for mobility. This will also help pinpoint ice locations and quantities for resource utilization.

These investigations are part of NASA's strategy to increase its lunar mission cadence, contributing to scientific advancement and paving the way for future human exploration, including missions to Mars.
