Myst Demake on Atari 2600

A programmer has successfully created a version of the classic PC game Myst to run on the original Atari 2600 console, a feat that required overcoming significant hardware limitations.

The Atari 2600, despite its popularity, had very limited hardware, including only 128 bytes of RAM, making game development challenging. A demake of Myst was created to adapt the 90s PC game for this older hardware.

The project involved using a specialized cartridge built with parts from the BurgerTime Atari game cartridge, which offered more memory than standard cartridges. The programmer encountered numerous timing and other issues, extending the project to three years.

The final demake utilizes the E7 bank switching scheme to access more memory within the cartridge, allowing Myst to run on the Atari 2600. This endeavor was an experiment to test the limits of original hardware, appealing to fans of console demoscenes.
