Mullvad stops offering its own DNS servers and sponsors Quad9

Mullvad, a well-known VPN provider, is stopping the offering of its own public encrypted DNS servers. From now on, the organization will financially support Quad9 as an alternative.

Mullvad has been offering public DNS servers with DNS over HTTPS (DoH) since 2022. However, these have become redundant when using Mullvad VPN, as the traffic is already encrypted and Mullvad VPN's internal DNS handles all requests. Nevertheless, Mullvad wants to keep a public service available, especially for users of Mullvad Browser who also use the DoH servers when the VPN is not enabled. Therefore, Quad9 is now being financially supported.

Users of Mullvad Browser with default DoH settings or ad-blocking settings will automatically switch to Quad9. Users who have manually adjusted their DoH settings must reset them to the default options themselves. Those who have manually configured the DoH servers have until November 2 to switch. Existing iOS and macOS profiles for DoH will no longer work after this date and must be migrated to the Quad9 profiles.
