Bather's Cabin Features Mossy Rooftop in East Sussex Woodland

A new cabin in East Sussex, designed by Built Works, features a planted rooftop terrace intended for bathing rituals, including a sauna, hot tub, and ice bath.

The Bather's Cabin is clad in blackened larch and topped with a lush roof garden, designed to feel integrated with the surrounding woodland. Visitors access the cabin via this rooftop, which is level with the adjacent bank.

The cabin's tiered exterior is inspired by 1960s granaries and is designed to soften its silhouette within the landscape. The rooftop planting includes mosses, grasses, and ferns sourced from the site.

Inside, the cabin has a cross-shaped plan that frames views in all directions, with minimal doors and curtains used for privacy. Locally sourced, natural materials are prioritized throughout.

Handmade elements include bathroom tiles with floral imprints and children's fingerprints, and block-printed curtains. Furniture is crafted from cedar blocks to echo the building's geometric form.

The cabin's floor is made of English oak cut on-site, and insulation is provided by UK-grown hemp. The design aims for a protective feel while merging with the woodland.
