MIT Quantum Initiative launches postdoctoral fellowship program

The MIT Quantum Initiative (QMIT) has established a new postdoctoral fellowship program aimed at advancing interdisciplinary quantum research and cultivating future leaders in quantum science and technology. This initiative is supported by a grant from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation.

The program aligns with QMIT's goal of pushing the boundaries of quantum science by encouraging researchers to integrate quantum approaches with other disciplines and emerging applications. Launched in December 2025 as a strategic initiative, QMIT unites researchers across MIT to accelerate quantum discovery and apply quantum advances to significant scientific, technological, industrial, and national security challenges.

Danna Freedman, faculty director of QMIT, emphasized the increasing interdisciplinary nature of quantum science and predicted that significant breakthroughs will emerge from researchers combining quantum expertise with perspectives from other fields. The fellowship is specifically designed to facilitate such interdisciplinary opportunities.

The QMIT Fellowship targets outstanding quantum researchers across physics, chemistry, materials science, and fundamental aspects of biological and Earth sciences. It particularly seeks individuals whose work merges deep quantum science expertise with a willingness to explore new intellectual areas.

An example of the program's interdisciplinary focus includes applying quantum systems to better understand biological processes, integrating expertise from atomic physics, quantum algorithms, and biology. Fellows will be integrated into QMIT's research areas, such as quantum computing, sensing, materials, simulation, and networks, with potential exploration of AI and quantum science combinations.

Fellows will join MIT's extensive quantum ecosystem, collaborating with researchers from various departments and laboratories, including the Research Laboratory of Electronics, MIT Lincoln Laboratory, and the MIT-Harvard Center for Ultracold Atoms.

Beyond individual research, the program aims to strengthen MIT's quantum community through collaboration, mentorship, and intellectual exchange across disciplines.

Ian Waitz, MIT's vice president for research, stated that quantum research is poised to make the impossible possible across many domains. He views the QMIT fellowship as an investment in postdoctoral scholars who will drive new quantum capabilities and transformative applications.

The first cohort of QMIT Fellows will commence their appointments in the 2026 academic year. Applications for a new cohort are expected to open in fall 2026, continuing the effort to build a cross-disciplinary research community advancing quantum science.
