Merckx-Holvoet Architecten designs seaside penthouse to evoke North Sea coast

Antwerp-based studio Merckx-Holvoet Architecten has designed a seaside penthouse in Duinbergen, Belgium, named V Penthouse, drawing inspiration from the sandy tones of the North Sea coast.

The 150-square-metre holiday home, located on the ninth and tenth floors of a building, features a pared-back material palette and neutral tones that echo the surrounding dunes and sea. The design aims for an interior that envelops without overwhelming, revealing itself slowly through poetry and refinement.

Throughout the residence, walls covered in sandblasted Travertino Noce stone are combined with lime-based flooring and solid oakwood details. A central entrance foyer on the lower floor features a sculptural oak staircase leading to the upper level. The foyer is flanked by a sea-view living room and a kitchen-dining area, both opening onto a verandah.

The living room is furnished with neutral-hued and tactile, modernist pieces. The kitchen incorporates floor-to-ceiling Travertino Noce shutters concealing storage, with an oak wood island topped with Egyptian sandstone. The dining area includes a custom Italian lavastone table and an L-shaped bench crafted from Egyptian sandstone and oak wood, complemented by woven dining chairs.

The homogeneous material palette continues in the primary bedroom and guest suites upstairs. The primary bedroom's ensuite features picture windows by the bathtub and shower, offering views of the North Sea. Much of the furniture and lighting, including a mahogany table lamp and an outdoor aluminium stool, was custom-made by the architects. Minimalist artwork by artists like Andy Warhol and Sol Lewitt is displayed on the walls.
