Nuvistor Project Demonstrates Vacuum Tube Viability

Despite the dominance of semiconductors, building circuits with RCA Nuvistors, a type of vacuum tube, remains possible and was recently demonstrated.

Nuvistors were used in compact, low-power circuits, particularly for radio frequency applications like VHF and UHF, offering excellent low-noise characteristics. They found use in televisions, radios, oscilloscopes, and even space probes until the early 1970s.

A recent project built a 555-style timer using tetrode nuvistors. This project provides insight into the practicalities of using nuvistors, though it did not involve highly complex designs.

Like other vacuum tubes, nuvistors have a heater element, contributing to slow startup times and significant current draw. However, they offer advantages over transistors, including immunity to electrostatic discharge (ESD), electromagnetic interference (EMI), and even electromagnetic pulses (EMP).

The nuvistor-based 555 timer implementation required extra pins for the heater supply, consuming approximately 7.5 Watts. This 'hollow-state 555 timer' functions similarly to its semiconductor counterpart but incurs higher power costs and cannot be miniaturized significantly.
