DIY Digital Cassette Player Adapter
A maker has created a custom digital music player designed to fit inside a cassette tape shell, bridging the gap between analog and digital audio formats.

The device functions as an MP3 player and Bluetooth receiver, outputting audio to a cassette player's magnetic read head. Interfacing with the player's mechanisms, such as auto-stop and reverse, required custom gearing to detect spool motion and transfer it between spools.
The project utilizes an ESP32-S3 module for control, a microSD card reader for music storage, and a PCM5102 I2S audio codec for analog audio output. The necessary gears were produced using an SLA printer.
A limitation of the current design is that it does not measure the motion of the capstan, which is the primary mechanism for tape transport. This oversight may be addressed in future revisions of the device.
