Madrid Region and Leganés Launch Urban Design Contest for New Sustainable District

The Community of Madrid and the City Council of Leganés have initiated an urban planning design contest to develop the "Puerta de Madrid" sustainable district. This initiative aims to gather innovative proposals for a new urban area adjacent to the Leganés Norte neighborhood.

The "Puerta de Madrid" district, spanning over one million square meters, will be managed by a consortium of public administrations. The area is characterized by the Butarque Stream and its connection to ecological corridors. Approximately 40% of the development will be dedicated to green spaces and public areas, with the remaining 60% allocated to public facilities, tertiary uses, and residential housing.

The plan includes approximately 4,000 dwellings, with 1,500 market-rate homes and 2,500 units designated for public housing or affordable rental programs. Proposals must integrate with the existing urban fabric and adhere to advanced criteria in environmental sustainability, urban innovation, energy efficiency, sustainable mobility, climate resilience, and social cohesion.

A jury will assess submissions to select the top three proposals. The winning teams will then be eligible to compete for a contract to draft the planning instrument that will guide the future district's development. The registration and submission deadline for the contest is November 6, 2026.
