Ghana Cuckooshrike Rediscovered in West Africa After 12 Years

A bird species, the Ghana cuckooshrike, has been sighted in the forests of Côte d'Ivoire after being considered lost for over a decade. This rediscovery occurred during bird surveys in West Africa.

Field research fellows Paulo Ditzel and Stephanie Bartlett of the International Bird Conservation Partnership (IBCP) encountered the bird in Taï National Park. Ditzel identified the bird by its distinctive orange body, yellow and black wings, and dark head with copper cheek markings.

The sighting prompted immediate action to document the bird, with Bartlett successfully capturing a photograph. This was crucial as the birds in the region are typically elusive and difficult to observe closely, making photographic evidence essential for identification during surveys.
