Liverpool's First Enclosed Dock

The infrastructure that transformed Liverpool into a major shipping hub lies hidden beneath the Liverpool ONE shopping centre.

Liverpool, despite its 1207 charter as a port city, initially struggled due to competition from Chester and poor infrastructure. Loading and unloading ships was a slow process, often taking weeks as vessels anchored in the estuary and cargo was ferried ashore by smaller boats.

In 1710, a plan was proposed to dam the tidal estuary and construct a large enclosed port. This dock, approximately 100 by 200 meters and lined with brick, opened in 1715, enabling ships to dock and process cargo within a single day.

Larger docks eventually replaced the original structure in the mid-to-late 18th century. The old dock was filled in and preserved under a new customs house in 1825. This customs house was later destroyed by bombing in World War II, and the original dock walls were rediscovered during redevelopment.

While a glimpse of the dock is possible through a porthole in the shopping center, the National Museums Liverpool tour offers the best viewing experience. However, tours are infrequent and tend to sell out quickly.
