Indian House Interiors Shaped by Brick Jali

Brick jali, a perforated or lattice brick screen, is being reinterpreted in contemporary Indian residential architecture, drawing on vernacular elements to mediate between interior and exterior spaces.

These porous brick envelopes control light, air, heat, and views. Openings are arranged to allow sunlight to enter interiors in a dappled manner, creating dynamic light and shadow patterns.

The screens also temper solar exposure and heat gain while facilitating natural ventilation through the house. In some designs, brickwork collaborates with courtyards and other passive strategies for airflow.
