AI-GUIDE Device Wins Technology Transfer Award
MIT Lincoln Laboratory and Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) have received the 2026 Excellence in Technology Transfer Award for AI-GUIDE, a portable medical device designed to assist with vascular access in pre-hospital settings. The device is being transferred to the startup AutonomUS Medical Technologies, Inc.
Funded by the U.S. Army's Combat Casualty Care Research Program, AI-GUIDE pairs AI software with handheld ultrasound technology to help users insert guidewires and catheters into blood vessels. This capability is crucial for military medics to provide life-saving interventions in the field before patients reach a hospital.
The device allows personnel with minimal specialized training to perform medical procedures that would typically require a hospital setting, significantly improving patient survival rates. The project transitioned from concept to a working proof-of-concept within three years.
Following clinical testing at MGH, Lincoln Laboratory and MGH staff founded AutonomUS Medical Technologies to commercialize the device. The startup has secured FDA Breakthrough Device Designation and funding from various government and private sources.
This collaboration aims to expedite the availability of life-saving technologies for both military personnel and civilians. The AI-GUIDE team is also developing additional capabilities, including peripheral nerve block technology for trauma care and pain management.
