Mallorcan Townhouse Renovated Using Reused Materials

KOSMOS Architects and Blanca Gardelegui transformed a traditional townhouse in Banyalbufar, Mallorca, by prioritizing repair and reuse of existing and local materials.

The project, Amor de la Isla, uses the site's limitations and available materials as its core design strategy, addressing construction challenges in the steep terrain.

Architects found new uses for broken tiles, old doors, roof tiles, oil funnels, and a manhole cover.

Renovation involved repairing existing elements. Broken floor tiles became a terrazzo surface, and an old door was adapted into a folding door.

Oil funnels serve as lamps, roof tiles as lampshades, a manhole cover forms the stove base, and rebar caps are door handles.

Color reshaped rooms. New additions were minimal, with existing elements altered while retaining their character.

A facade pulley aids material transport, with a light giving it a secondary function.

The renovation allows the building to evolve without losing its historical identity.
