JRC Launches Security Research and Innovation Campus

The European Commission has launched a new Security Research and Innovation Campus at the Joint Research Centre (JRC) in Ispra, aiming to accelerate the deployment of critical security technologies in Europe.

The Campus integrates JRC laboratories and expertise across six key areas: space, connectivity and quantum; border management; crisis management; defence; internal security; and nuclear security. This structure is designed to address hybrid threats and evolving operational priorities.

To ensure strategic alignment, the JRC will collaborate with EU agencies like Frontex, Europol, eu-LISA, and the European Defence Agency, along with member state authorities and research institutions.

The initiative seeks to overcome fragmentation in security knowledge, slow innovation, and duplicated testing by creating a collaboration hub.

National experts and EU security practitioners will gain direct access to JRC research facilities, training, and collaboration schemes.

This launch is part of the ProtectEU Internal Security Strategy, which aims to bolster the EU's security capabilities in response to a rapidly changing geopolitical landscape and increasing hybrid threats from hostile states and organized crime.
