Jesse Butterfield's "A Veiled Boundary" Exhibition Merges Paper and Metal

Designer Jesse Butterfield showcased his "A Veiled Boundary" exhibition during London Design Festival 2026, featuring lighting and stools that combine paper and hand-hammered steel.

The exhibition, curated by Alex Tieghi-Walker and located in the Brompton Design District, presented the "Sew Paper Lighting" and "Stool Des Pois" series. The paper lanterns utilize the material's lightness and translucency, continuing a long tradition of lampshade making.

Butterfield collaborated with The Paper Foundation, a Lake District paper mill, to select handmade papers for the "Sew Paper Lighting" series. These papers were chosen for their draping and lighting qualities, forming amorphous shapes stitched together and supported by slim stainless steel frames.

The "Stool Des Pois" series explores sheet metal's potential to mimic paper's behavior. Starting from a paper model, the stools were scaled up and crafted from steel, heated and hammered to achieve a paper-like thinness and lightness.

The metal stools feature a hammered texture and intentional "singed spots" or blackening, adding visual interest and reflecting their manufacturing process. Butterfield noted these imperfections align with the Brompton Design District's theme of "perfectly imperfect."

The "A Veiled Boundary" exhibition ran from September 12 to 20 as part of the London Design Festival.
