James Chinlund Designs Futuristic Hovering Vehicles for Louis Vuitton Runway
For Louis Vuitton's Spring-Summer 2027 show, production designer James Chinlund transformed the Louvre's Cour Carrée into a futuristic cityscape featuring 34 hovering concept vehicles.

The installation, presented during Paris Fashion Week, suspended sculptural cars at various heights above a runway, creating an illusion of a city suspended between the present and future. The vehicles, in cream and forest-green with graphic stripes and Louis Vuitton's Damier pattern, featured glowing headlights and abstract proportions, suggesting alternative urban mobility.
Chinlund's design contrasted the futuristic vehicles with the historic architecture of the Louvre, incorporating the building's façades into the visual narrative. An asphalt-like surface below provided a ground-level path for models, creating a dialogue between movement and stillness.
Chinlund, known for his production design on films like 'The Batman,' has previously collaborated with Louis Vuitton, notably on their Cruise 2025 presentation in Barcelona.
The set design for Nicolas Ghesquière's collection, titled 'Ergonomie,' explored themes of contemporary urban life, speed, and congestion, contrasting with the collection's focus on lightness and fluid garments. This created a dialogue between the rigidity of machines and the freedom of human movement.
The installation reimagined Louis Vuitton's 'Art of Travel' theme, presenting transportation as speculative design sculptures that transcended conventional roads. The hovering cars offered an alternative vision of mobility within the historic courtyard.
