Ivy Studio transforms brutalist Quebec bank into exotic animal clinic

Ivy Studio has redesigned a 1970s brutalist bank in Laval, Quebec, into a veterinary clinic for exotic animals named Fauna. The design emphasizes a calm, minimalist interior with soft lighting to create a soothing environment for stressed animals and their handlers.

The Fauna clinic is housed in a standalone brutalist structure near the waterfront. Ivy Studio embraced the building's existing style, creating a minimalist environment. Consultation rooms are offset and feature sweeping curved walls that mimic the building's exterior, providing intimacy and acting as a sculptural focal point.

The 380-square-meter clinic spans two levels, with public areas and treatment facilities on the ground floor. Exposed concrete coffered ceilings contrast with concrete flooring and textured plaster walls. Fluted glass doors lead into consultation rooms equipped with walnut desks and chrome-based benches.

A spiral staircase connects the ground floor to the basement, which contains office, storage, and research spaces. The original bank vault has been repurposed as a closed pharmacy and lab. Lighting is carefully considered, with diffused light boxes in consultation rooms and soft, dimmed, indirect lighting in public areas.

Ivy Studio, known for its hospitality projects, adapted the former financial institution into a contemporary medical facility. The design aims to establish a dialogue between the imposing institutional architecture and the compassionate nature of veterinary care.
