Biodegradable Pavilion Woven into Landscape

A temporary architectural pavilion named Woven, designed by Atelier DARN, utilizes nature-based materials to explore cycles of transformation and regeneration.

Located in Les Gavarres, Spain, the pavilion is constructed from wood and biodegradable 3D-printed modules made from miscanthus. Approximately 700 interlocking components form a woven structure that rises from the forest floor, designed without glue, rope, or synthetic materials.

The design draws inspiration from climbing plants, integrating with the surrounding landscape for support. The structure is intended to be gradually covered by vegetation, eventually weathering and decomposing back into the environment.

Individual modules feature a cross-shaped section, referencing Catalan architecture and the columns of the Barcelona Pavilion. This geometry allows pieces to connect and extend in multiple directions, forming the larger woven structure.

The pavilion's life cycle is designed to include weathering and decomposition as integral parts of its existence, treating architecture as a process that becomes part of the landscape.
