InterDigital demands 101,7 million euros from Disney over patent infringement

The American patent company InterDigital has filed a claim for 101,7 million euros against Disney. The claim concerns alleged infringement of patents for high dynamic range (HDR) streaming technology by Disney+.

InterDigital states that Disney+ uses its patented technologies for HDR and 4k without a license. The claim has been filed with a German court and focuses on Disney+'s HDR usage in Europe. Previous lawsuits led to Disney+ limiting or no longer offering 4k and HDR at all in various EU countries.

A European patent court ruled earlier this year that Disney+ indeed infringes InterDigital's patents. As a result, Disney+ stopped offering 4k and HDR in countries such as the Netherlands and Belgium, as well as the casting technologies Chromecast and AirPlay.

Disney+ has since switched to a different streaming technology to offer 4k again, albeit on fewer devices. The streaming service plans to offer HDR again as well. However, InterDigital claims that Disney is still infringing its patents in doing so, which is the reason for the new lawsuit.
