IEEE Student Conference Empowers Future Researchers

The IEEE–Eta Kappa Nu (IEEE-HKN) honor society is hosting the inaugural 'Innovating the Future' event on November 6th, a one-day in-person conference designed for student authors to present their original research.

The conference provides a platform for undergraduate and graduate students to share their work, network with peers, and gain experience in the academic publishing process. Students submitted abstracts by May 1st and those accepted were paired with IEEE mentors to guide them through research writing, presentation, and publication. Accepted papers will be submitted for publication in the IEEE Xplore Digital Library.

Manuel Castro, the conference’s technical program chair, highlighted the event's importance for student skill development and transforming technical activities into publications. Sorel Reisman, an IEEE Life Fellow and professor emeritus, emphasized the conference's timeliness in the current research landscape, particularly with AI's impact on academic integrity, stressing the need for future scholars to understand legitimate publishing standards.

A key feature is the mentorship initiative, where experienced IEEE volunteers guide students on structuring technical content, navigating peer review, and preparing manuscripts. Mentors like Wafa Elmannai, an associate professor, see research as crucial for technological advancement and believe mentoring builds students' confidence, curiosity, and critical thinking. Student David Kwabi-Addo views the conference as a vital opportunity to gain experience in academic scholarship, learn to communicate research to a broader audience, and receive feedback.

The IEEE-HKN YouTube channel offers workshops on various aspects of academic publishing, including crafting abstracts, determining publication readiness, writing technical papers, and handling the review process. An upcoming workshop will focus on adapting papers into conference talks. The 'Innovating the Future' program aims to enhance submission quality and foster long-term professional development and research communication skills for the next generation of IEEE authors.
