Ian Potter State Theatre Refurbished for Future Performances

Architecture studios NH Architecture and Snøhetta have completed a significant refurbishment of Melbourne's Ian Potter State Theatre, originally designed by Roy Grounds and John Truscott. This project marks a key milestone in the Melbourne Arts Precinct Transformation initiative.

The renovation focused on revitalizing the 2,000-seat auditorium and its distinctive brass ceiling, while also adding backstage facilities. The aim was to prepare the theatre for future performances while preserving its historical character.

A "retention-first approach" was adopted to maintain the integrity of Truscott's original interior design, which featured red carpets, brass elements, and a brass ceiling. This involved careful restoration, adaptation, and reproduction of original materials, minimizing waste and respecting heritage guidelines.

The original cascading brass ceiling, composed of approximately 75,000 etched brass spheres, was removed, cleaned, and reinstalled. New custom seats, closely resembling the originals, and timber flooring were added to complement the restored aesthetic.

Improvements to the auditorium's acoustics and technical capabilities include a new custom-moulded acoustic ceiling with over 27,000 baubles to diffuse sound, and timber battens on the rear wall for sound absorption.

Layout modifications included new aisles, an extended balcony for additional seating, and improved accessibility with new lifts. A 14-meter excavation created space for a new rehearsal studio and function room.

The project demonstrates how a heritage venue can evolve to be more inclusive and technically advanced while retaining its cultural identity and significance.
