Grid-Level Current Transformers for High-Voltage Monitoring

Monitoring high voltages and currents on the national electrical grid presents significant engineering challenges due to the extreme power levels involved.

Jordan Taylor, also known as The Electric Brit, explains how grid-level current transformers (CTs) and associated components provide galvanic isolation for safe current measurements. While basic principles are similar to other applications, the scale of currents, often 5 kA and above, demands greater clearances and precision.

CTs are crucial for implementing over-current protection (OCP), over-voltage protection (OVP), and differential protection. Differential protection helps detect leakage and shorts, including those caused by damaged CT windings.

Failure conditions detected by CTs can trigger circuit breakers or other corrective actions, and can also identify illicit power tapping.

Like all transformers, CTs are imperfect due to issues such as core saturation. Selecting the appropriate transformer type and ensuring accurate measurements is a complex process.

CTs and related equipment enable AC power grids to respond to changes, forming a reliable foundation for modern society.
