Henry Wessel's California Photography Exhibition Opens at The Grolier Club

An exhibition showcasing over 65 prints by photographer Henry Wessel (1942-2018) has opened at The Grolier Club in New York, running through November 14.

The exhibition, titled "Henry Wessel — Photographs and Books," features Wessel's black-and-white compositions, including his "Incidents" and "Traffic" series in their entirety, alongside works from his "Real Estate" and "Night Walks" series.

Wessel, a New Jersey native who later taught at the San Francisco Art Institute, became known in the early 1970s for his documentary and landscape imagery, often capturing the unique light and character of the Bay Area.

He developed a distinctive approach for his "Traffic" series, photographing candid moments from his car's driver's seat to better translate his direct experience, believing preparation could increase the likelihood of capturing good fortune.

The "Night Walks" series involved Wessel taking portraits of local homes during early morning or evening hours.

The exhibition also includes some of Wessel's earliest works, dating back to 1968, as well as pieces from the 1980s and 1990s.
