HENN Launches Free CarbonBudget Tool for Building CO2 Emissions

Architecture firm HENN has released CarbonBudget, a free digital tool to calculate project-specific CO2 emissions for buildings. This initiative aims to help designers meet the Paris Agreement's 1.5°C global warming target, addressing the construction industry's significant contribution to global emissions.

The tool assesses if a European building project's emissions align with the 1.5°C target, using inputs like location and area. It translates abstract temperature limits into actionable data by considering a project's lifecycle carbon footprint, including operational and embodied carbon.

CarbonBudget provides a framework to assess a building's CO2 value and how its usage impacts this. It is intended for professionals to make informed decisions early in the design process.

By inputting project details, the software assesses compatibility with the 1.5°C target for European projects. It visualizes emissions against the CO2 budget and can quantify societal follow-on costs if budgets are exceeded.

The tool integrates data from SBTi and CRREM, accounting for electricity grid decarbonization. It notes that technology-intensive buildings require more energy than offices, and mixed-use typologies can be complex.

This launch aligns with broader industry efforts towards sustainability, including similar digital tools from other international firms.
