New insights into how Uro-Vaxom® combats recurrent UTIs

Researchers have uncovered a dual mechanism by which the established UTI treatment Uro-Vaxom® (OM-89) strengthens the bladder's defenses and enhances antibiotic efficacy against persistent bacteria.

UTIs are common, with bacteria hiding within bladder cells evading antibiotics and the immune system, leading to recurrent infections and potential resistance.

A study in PLOS Pathogens shows OM-89 has a direct effect on bladder epithelial cells, beyond its immune-stimulating properties.

Research on mouse and human bladder cells indicates OM-89 enhances cellular degradation via lysosomes, crucial for eliminating hidden bacteria.

OM-89 also increases antibiotic uptake into bladder cells. Combined use in models improved bacterial killing and reduced regrowth.
