Artist Hannah Beuchler Uses Loom Bands to Create Textured Art

Artist Hannah Beuchler transforms colorful loom bands, a material from a past childhood craze, into art that resembles expressionist paintings.

Beuchler's artworks, at first glance, appear as paintings with gestural brushstrokes and deliberate color choices. However, upon closer inspection, the viewer notices the unusual texture created by thousands of loom bands arranged in vibrant relief.

Drawing inspiration from her interest in fabrics and the mark-making techniques of Impressionist painters, Beuchler explores the boundaries of textiles using found and recycled materials. Her work often examines the interplay between natural and synthetic elements.

To create her pieces, Beuchler uses a felt template as a substrate. She loops the loom bands onto small tufts of colorful wool roving, allowing the soft, malleable segments to be curved and fitted together like a puzzle.
