GRT Architects Revamps Storefront Gallery

GRT Architects has renovated New York's Storefront for Art and Architecture, adding modular shelving and a doorknob. The project updated building systems and the gallery's interior.

The renovation modernized the street-level gallery, which hadn't seen major changes in twenty years. A flexible, modular aluminum shelving system was installed for diverse exhibition needs, attaching to anchors on the front wall.

The shelving components can be reconfigured for video projections or objects. The system uses customized parts and can be fully removed, leaving the space empty.

A stainless steel handle was added to a facade panel, serving as the main entrance. This is the first time the gallery has had a dedicated door handle.

Structural updates included overhauling electrical and HVAC systems, redoing track lighting, and clearing accumulated architectural alterations.

The gallery's bathroom was re-tiled with bright work by artist Jorge Pardo. The space was intended to be more inviting and functional.

GRT Architects, founded in 2014, has experience in adaptive reuse. Founding partner Tal Schori has a prior connection to Storefront, having worked there previously.
