Grand Vista Sanitarium Ruins in Wildcat Canyon

Remnants of the Grand Vista Sanitarium, once a restorative healing estate, can be found within Wildcat Canyon Regional Park in Richmond, California.

Established in 1914 by Dr. Hendrick Nelsen Belgum, the sanitarium aimed to care for patients with physical and mental ailments, promoting a healing approach through fresh food and a nurturing environment. The estate featured orchards, gardens, dairy, poultry, and its own spring water system.

While some locals referred to it as 'the crazy house,' others remembered it as a peaceful estate with beautiful views and quiet patients. Dr. Belgum managed the sanitarium until his death in 1948 while fighting a brush fire.

After Dr. Belgum's death, his siblings took over, but the sanitarium declined without his leadership. The property was left to nature after his brother's death in 1963 and was later destroyed by arsonists in 1977.

Today, only crumbling foundations, scattered palm trees, and a historical placard remain as vestiges of the once-grand estate, visible along the Bonitas Gate and Belgum Trail Loop.
