Google is working on an unlock feature with a Google account

Google is investigating the possibility of unlocking Android phones with a Google account, should the user forget their PIN or password.

The feature was discovered in the fifth beta of Android 17 QPR2. It is still unclear if and when Google will widely roll out this option.

The option would appear in the device unlock menu, where password, PIN, or biometric methods can currently be set. Once activated, the linked Google account can be used to unlock the device.

Google previously offered a similar reset function, but this was removed after Android 4.4. Since then, users had to factory reset their phone, losing data, if they forgot their unlock credentials.
