Dawson City's Gold Rush Cabin Restored

A historic log cabin in Dawson City, Yukon, has undergone extensive restoration after decades of deterioration.

The cabin, documented in Dawson City by 1900 and possibly older, has connections to the Trading & Exploring Company. It survived the population collapse following the Klondike Gold Rush when many buildings were lost.

By the early 2000s, the cabin was severely deteriorated and leaning, requiring a guy wire for support.

In 2005, the cabin was dismantled, with each log numbered for reassembly. Rotten sections were replaced using traditional splicing techniques.

During restoration, remnants of an older sod roof, evidence of a chimney fire, and items like newspapers, denim, and hand-painted wallpaper were discovered beneath floorboards and roofing.

After repairs, the cabin was reassembled in its original position and continues to stand overlooking the Yukon River.

Unusually for a surviving Gold Rush-era building, visitors can now stay overnight in the restored cabin.
