GM's 1969 Electric Commuter Prototype

General Motors experimented with electric vehicles in the 1960s, exploring alternatives to gasoline engines to combat air pollution.

GM developed the XP-512E, a two-seater electric commuter prototype with a fiberglass body and steel chassis. It was one of three variants, alongside conventional and hybrid versions, all designed for short journeys.

Limited by 1960s lead-acid battery technology, the 1,250 lb XP-512E had a top speed of 30 mph and a range of 50 miles. The vehicle featured a lifting canopy for cockpit access.

These experimental vehicles, along with AMC's Amitron, did not reach production but highlight early efforts in electric car development.
