Frank Gehry's Colburn School Expansion to Open September 25, 2027

The Colburn School in Los Angeles will open its new 100,000-square-foot campus expansion, designed by Frank Gehry, on September 25, 2027. The expansion features a new 1,000-seat concert hall and significantly increases facilities for dance.

The centerpiece of the expansion is the Terri and Jerry Kohl Hall, a round concert hall designed with an in-the-round seating arrangement. It includes an orchestra pit and a stage suitable for large-scale productions. The interior will feature natural light and adjustable acoustic elements. The hall is intended for a variety of performances, including orchestral, dance, opera, and jazz.

Gehry collaborated with acoustician Yasuhisa Toyota and consultant Michael Ferguson on the hall's design. The building's exterior is characterized by interlocking volumes finished in a custom metallic pink coating called Pink Kandi. A light-filled entrance connects different parts of the building and gardens.

The expansion also houses the Trudl Zipper Dance Institute, tripling the school's dance facilities. This section includes a 100-seat Studio Theater and four professional-sized studios. It is slated to open in August 2027.

Programming for the new hall and dance center, including artist residencies and performances by students, faculty, and guest artists, will be announced in spring 2026. Terri and Jerry Kohl Hall will be the home of the Colburn Orchestra.

The opening will be marked by a gala concert on September 25, 2027, followed by a community celebration and ribbon-cutting ceremony the next day. Free performances will occur across campus, culminating in a final concert at Terri and Jerry Kohl Hall.
