France Marks 200 Years of Photography with Traveling Exhibitions

This year marks the bicentennial of photography, originating with Nicéphore Niépce's first permanent image capture and Louis Daguerre's public introduction of the Daguerreotype in 1839.

To commemorate this milestone, GrandPalaisRmn has launched "Grand Angle," a series of 11 traveling exhibitions across France and internationally.

These exhibitions showcase diverse themes such as 19th-century portraits, dance, rural life, and war photography.

The featured works are primarily drawn from the extensive archives of GrandPalaisRmn and Médiathèque du patrimoine et de la photographie (MPP), which hold approximately 1.8 million digitized images.

The initiative is a collaboration with Centre national des arts plastiques (Cnap), the International Olympic Committee (IOC), and Fisheye.

Recent exhibitions include "Ruralités" in Roubion and a solo show of Willy Ronis's work at the Châtel-Saint-Germain library.

The program is scheduled to run until September 2027.
